Get your basic WordPress SEO right

There’s also the security piece to think about, too. WordPress themes that aren’t coded well, that aren’t updated frequently by the developer, or that have other vulnerabilities leaving them open to hackers could lead to an infection on your site. If you don’t change your settings from the default, all of your pages and posts will have URLs which look like example.com/?p=123. Whilst this is perfectly okay, it’s not particularly nice, and it might impact how users and search engines perceive the quality and relevance of your pages.

Notice that these URLs use numbers unrelated to the content, and a user cannot guess what they will find on the page by looking at the URL.

You need to visit the Settings » Permalinks page. Select the post name option and then click on the ‘Save Changes’ button to store your settings.

One of the first things you should do is change your permalink settings, which you can find in Settings → Permalinks.

It’s highly recommended that people use a structure which creates URLs which look like example.com/post-name/, or example.com/category/post-name/, depending on how much importance they anticipate placing on the categorization of their content. For most WordPress sites, choosing either of these options will be perfectly suitable.

For the first option, you can just change the permalink setting to /%postname%/

Post name is the most SEO-friendly option for most websites because:

  • It gives people a sense of what the page is about from the URL alone. That may increase your click-through rate in the SERPs which leads to more organic traffic.
  • It increases the likeliness of you getting keyword-rich backlinks. That’s links with your target keywords in the anchor text. You’ll need to use your keywords in the URL for this to happen.

To include the category, you can select “Custom Structure” and change the value to /%category%/%postname%/.

If you previously had ?p= as your permalink, WordPress will take care of all the redirects for you. This is also true if you change from /%postname%/ to /%category%/%postname%/.

Choose www vs. non-www

You need to think about what you want your site to show up as www.example.com, or simply example.com.
So choose a preferred version and set it as the WordPress Address URL and Site Address URL in your WP backend.
You can find those options under Settings > General.

Does it make any difference which version you choose? For new websites, not at all. It comes down to personal preference.
From an SEO perspective, there’s little difference either way. Additionally, most hosting and server setups will automatically redirect requests for the ‘wrong’ version, to the version you’ve selected. That makes this primarily a branding consideration — which approach feels best for your site?

From a technical perspective, there’s not a huge amount of difference, either. Some setups might have some minor headaches if they omit the ‘www’ component, but these are increasingly rare.

But if your site is currently accessible at both the www and non-www URLs (type them into your browser to check for redirects), then you should choose the version that Google seems to prefer already.

You can check this in Google.

Search for site:www.yourdomain.com. Look at the number of results, Then do the same for the version without the www. That’s site:yourdomain.com -inurl:www, Whichever version returns the most results should be set as the preferred version.

Comments can be a strong indication of user engagement on your website. Engaged users means more links back to your site, more traffic, and improved SEO.

But you need to make sure that your comments are real and not spam. Spammers submit comments with bad links which could affect and even ruin your search rankings, Most blog comments are innocent enough. Usually, it’ll be people asking legitimate questions or saying how much they enjoyed your post.

But be aware: Blog comment spam is a thing. A big thing.

Spammers use automated software to post comments to hundreds or thousands of blogs. Avoid Snippet Variables

Snippet variables act as templates for your SEO titles + meta descriptions IF you don’t write them manually. You should ALWAYS write these manually so they read nicely (people want to click you link), so they’re within the character limits, and so they include your focus keyword.

I use the templates below in case I forget to write my SEO title + meta description (which I never do). You can set this too, but do not rely on snippet variables – they’re a bad shortcut.

Add Date To Snippet Preview (For Posts)

An easy way to increase click-through rates (CTR) for posts is to show their publish date in snippets – this keeps your content looking fresh. Google uses the post modified date which you can add to the top of posts. Each time you update a post, Google will use the current day.

It’s no secret that the number of Google searchers that click on an organic search result is way down, And it’s no wonder why. Featured Snippets make it so you don’t need to click on anything to get an answer, Plus, Google now packs the search results with more ads than ever before.
Search volume only gives you part of the story. To get a full estimate of how many clicks you’ll get from a first page Google ranking, you also need to estimate organic CTR.

  • Use headline tags to break your text into main ideas. Place keywords and keyword phrases into these headlines to make them stand out as more important than the rest of the text. Headlines will be larger than normal type face, so use them to separate ideas and highlight phrases people are likely to search for.
  • Use your targeted keyword phrases in the content that you write. Include at least one or two different keyword phrases in the first and second paragraphs of your text and scatter more phrases throughout the page.
  • Add your keyword phrases and a description to the Meta section of your HTML markup. Write your description as a complete sentence . Arrange your keyword phrases according to the highest volume.

New websites with low DA should target very specific, low competition phrases with low monthly searches.
